The baby’s rattle is boring to them, children’s toys are still unsuitable. Children from the age of one are a special target group. Luna Journal spoke to manufacturers who have focused on these customers and asked them for tips for the trade.

After their first birthday, toddlers feel that the whole world is open to them. Crawling or already running, they begin to discover their surroundings. Their visual thinking grows, as does their preference for shapes and colors. Suitable toys for children from the age of one can provide valuable stimulation and promote abilities. “The human brain is particularly adaptable in the first three years of life - and thus more capable of learning than ever before in later life,” says brain researcher Professor Dr. Dr. Manfred Spitzer, head of the Transfer Center for Neurosciences and Learning in Ulm. Together with his experts, Ravensburger has developed the series Spielend Erstes Lernen (Playful first fearning) and implemented these findings from modern brain research. “In this phase of life, children need good impulses from the outside, for example through language stimuli or materials for motor skills,” said Spitzer. The “Spielend Erstes Lernen” series, for example, includes the game “Was ziehe ich an” (What do I wear), in which suitable clothes are placed in the magic folding cupboard.

Moving books are popular toys for children over one year of age

Children from the age of one are in a kind of intermediate world. They no longer want the baby toy, but they are often overwhelmed by normal children’s toys. Therefore, many parents, grandparents and relatives are looking for an offer that fits as well as possible. Books enjoy great popularity. Fischer Sauerländer offers lovingly illustrated sound books with its “Hörst du…” series, which can also be easily used by small children. From arsEdition there are cardboard picture books with extra thick pages. Individual elements can be moved or invite you to feel them. Playmobil’s 1.2.3 series is aimed at children aged 1.5 and over. The figures and game worlds are intended to train motor skills in a playful way, are robust and do not contain any small parts that can be swallowed. With “My first building blocks”, Duplo also offers colorful play sets for children from 1.5 years of age. With their colors, sounds and ease of use, VTech toys attract the attention of small children.

Exactly this high demand was also the motor for the newcomer millaminis. The young company from the Czech Republic produces colorful toys that grow with the child and are robust. Co-owner Ondrej Stepanek: “The basic idea was to bring innovative, safe and entertaining toys for children onto the market that they can use from birth on. At the age of zero to two years there are not so many possibilities what you can buy for the babies. Mostly it is plush toys or something to bite on - no real added value for the development of babies. That’s why we thought that our products should have some added value.” The products are certified for babies from birth and have no sharp edges. They are manufactured in the Czech Republic. Important for parents: “Babies can play with our products indoors, outdoors or in the water. If they get dirty, they can also wash them in the washing machine,” says Stepanek.
